Karolinka apparently undergoing some phase transition - the ladies in the nursery is terribly excited because apparently they begin to speak French. Indeed, something has changed - instead of hands to recite to the class and groaning as it is now going out to run and wave his hand in farewell. Clearly baby took courage.
